If you’ve ever wondered how brands craft their stories or how organizations manage their reputations, public relations might be the field for you. At The University of Alabama, there are plenty of ways to get involved and build your PR skills. Whether you’re just starting out or already have some experience, here are the best ways to dive into PR on campus.

1. Join UA’s PRSSA Chapter

If you want to connect with industry professionals and peers, The University of Alabama’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter offers many ways to get informed and involved. As a member, you’ll gain access to networking events across the globe, hands-on workshops — including résumé writing and elevator pitches — and national opportunities like the Bateman Case Study Competition. Plus, you’ll meet other students who share your passion for PR.

Pro tip: Take advantage of leadership roles within the chapter. Serving as an officer or committee member is a great way to stand out in future job applications, especially if you’re looking to strengthen your résumé.

2. Gain Real-World Experience with Capstone Agency

One of the best ways to learn PR is to practice it. UA’s Capstone Agency is a nationally recognized, student-run communications firm that works with real clients locally and nationally. Whether you’re creating campaigns, managing social media or planning events, this is a valuable opportunity to build a professional portfolio while gaining agency experience. Leadership roles are also available within the organization.

3. Write for Campus Publications

PR professionals need strong writing skills, so why not sharpen yours by contributing to campus publications like Platform Magazine, Alice or The Crimson White? There are plenty of publications on campus where you can practice many necessary skills, including writing articles, opinion pieces or event recaps. This is a great way to practice storytelling while building a portfolio that showcases your communication skills.

4. Take PR-Specific Courses

UA’s Department of Advertising and Public Relations is one of the best in the country. Classes like APR 325: Social and Digital Media, APR 332: PR Writing and APR 433: PR Campaigns will give you hands-on experience tackling real-world challenges. Many courses also bring in guest speakers from the industry, giving you direct insights into PR careers. It is also so important to utilize the resources professors give you, including internship and club recommendations.

5. Attend Networking Events

From Get On Board Day and career fairs to PRSSA-hosted panels there are plenty of chances to meet professionals and learn about the industry. Attending events where PR professionals speak can help you get your foot in the door — don’t hesitate to ask questions about careers in public relations.

6. Volunteer for Campus Organizations

Many student organizations need help with PR tasks like event promotion, social media management and branding. Volunteering is a great way to gain hands-on experience while supporting causes you care about.

7. Apply for PR Internships

Internships are one of the best ways to gain practical experience. Use resources like UA’s Career Center and faculty advisors and professors to find opportunities. Whether it’s a local nonprofit or a major agency, internships will help you build your network and sharpen your skills.
